Tipperary v Waterford NHL Meetings in Thurles

Waterford have only logged two league wins against Tipperary in Thurles (1981 and 1998). In their last six encounters, the Premier have recorded four wins along with two draws in 2004 and 2010.

35 years ago, Pat McGrath was star of the show from centre back as fourteen man Waterford prevailed by three (2-10 to 2-7). They shrugged off the dismissal of corner back Seamus Hannon to strike 1-5 without response during a second half purple patch. Jim Greene and Pat Curran found the net with McGrath on target twice from 65s.

In 1998, another number six Fergal Hartley drove the Déise to a first round victory at Semple Stadium. The Irish Independent offered a glowing review of his performance. “While many aspects of this fine victory might be lost in time the performance of Hartley will remain special to Déise followers as the 26-year-old from Ballygunner dominated the centre of the Waterford defence like no man in recent years.” Up front, Paul Flynn (1-6) and Ken McGrath (0-7) sent them eight points ahead before Tipp rallied. Liam Cahill and Declan Ryan struck for late consolation goals but the visitors finished the hour as 1-17 to 4-6 victors.
